Narrated by Vadruhi, Liza´s Mom
Hello, my name is Varduhi, I am Liza’s Mom. We live in Nor Hachn Town in Armenia. I am quite excited to write Liza’s story as we met many obstacles on our way to huge success.
Liza is my second child, she has an elder brother who is normally hearing. When Liza was an one year old child we noticed that she didn’t react to noises at all. We took her to Arabkir Paediatric Medical Center where she was diagnosed 4th grade of sensorineural hearing loss. It was a real shock to our family. At that moment we were ready to do everything for our baby girl. We were advised to go to Erebouni Medical Center where we found out about Cochlear implantations. When we were told about the huge amount of money needed for her salvation, first thing that came to our mind was to sell our nice apartment in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, and pay for the Cochlear implantation. We decided not to wait for years until we find a donor for Liza as we were clearly explained about the risks and that her chances of learning to hear and speak could be lost during the time.
So, we successfully sold our apartment in June, 2005, and Liza was implanted in August, 2005 with the help of Dr. Vigen Bakhshinyan. She got a Nucleus Sprint, an SP with a bag. With the help of Inessa Harutyunyan, Liza’s speech therapist, we noticed her increasing speech development soon after the first fitting. She started to pronounce letters, then words, then sentences. I cannot explain the happiness I felt at these very important moments for us.
We had to live in a small town but I never regretted our decision as my Liza became a normal hearing person. After some years I again had the same fear that my Liza could go deaf. She needed another speech processor and this time we didn’t have anything to sell to save her through buying a new one.
In 2010 Liza started to go to mainstream school. She did well at school, there was no difference between her and her peers.
The time went by, and except praying and being afraid I had nothing else to do.
One day, however, a real chance finally came to our place. I was called by the Erebouni Clinic and was asked to attend the 20th anniversary of the ENT department of the clinic. There we met Dr. Monika Lehnhardt, the president of Prof. Ernst Lehnhardt Foundation, who personally donated Liza and other kids from Armenia 3G SPrint SPs. Liza was so happy to have such a small processor in comparison to the bag, and she could even hear better.
At that time I thought that we were really lucky to get such a huge help. Only at that time I believed in true charity, where mainly the child has the benefit.
A year later Liza was donated another, more advanced Freedom SP from Dr. Lehnhardt.
Freedom gave my daughter more than we could dream of.
Liza hears very well, and she is happy with Freedom’s easiness to use. Moreover, she is happy that along with Freedom she also has the 3G Sprint in her drawer. So, if something happens to her Freedom SP, we are on the safe side.
My family sends many thanks to the Lehnhardt Foundation and personally to Monika Lehnhardt. After all these donations we know she is always with us.Narrated by Vadruhi, Liza´s Mom
